Sketch Out the Journey First

Picture the actual trip before anything else. Will it be a short run into town or a longer stretch of motorway with luggage and passengers? One family heading to a wedding, for example, might value boot space over fuel economy. Match the vehicle to the journey, not the other way round.

Sort the Paperwork Before You Make Contact

Gather driving licences for every potential driver, plus a payment card in the main hirer's name. Having these ready speeds up the conversation considerably. If anyone holds a licence issued abroad, dig it out early rather than scrabbling for it on collection day.

Decide Who Will Take the Wheel

Sharing driving duties on a longer trip makes sense, but each additional driver usually needs to be registered with the rental firm. Two colleagues travelling north, say, might split the motorway hours between them. Agree the driver list before you enquire so nobody is left out.

Set Dates That Will Hold Firm
