Start with a Realistic Hire Window

A few honest hours of thought about the clock saves most trouble later. Collection paperwork, a walk-round inspection, careful loading and the return check all sit outside your driving time, so quote a duration that absorbs them. Anchor the day at the latest sensible hand-back hour and work forwards.

Settle Both Handovers in Writing

Ask where the truck will be waiting, whether it returns to the same spot, and whether someone inspects it with you at each end. Request the fuel and mileage terms, the deposit arrangements and any late-return charge in the same message. Anything left unwritten should be treated as open.

Choose the Drivers Before You Enquire

Trucks are normally released only to the drivers listed on the booking, so decide the rota at home. Check every licence is valid rather than working from memory, declare any endorsements or licences issued abroad during the booking conversation, and ask the firm for its full document checklist.

Match the Vehicle to the Work

Describe the job before any vehicle: what travels on the back, roughly how much, and whether it is one move or several runs. If you are, say, moving staging for a planned event, list a tail lift, restraints or a crew seat as essentials and name two workable sizes.
