Decision One: What Are You Actually Moving?

Start with the goods. If the job is one bulky item — a piano, a workshop lathe, a wardrobe that refuses to be dismantled — measure it properly and weigh it honestly. Describe access and parking at both ends, then let the firm suggest the vehicle rather than naming a model yourself.

Decision Two: Who Takes the Wheel?

Write down everyone who might realistically drive, not just whoever expects the longest stint. Check each licence is current, find the physical card, and declare points or licences issued abroad. Ask what documents each named driver must show at handover, since lists differ between firms.

Decision Three: Which Questions Go in the First Message?

Raise cost and cover early, while nothing is signed. Ask what insurance comes with the truck, how large the excess runs, how the deposit is held and returned, and how mileage and fuel are handled. Nothing counts as included until it's written down plainly enough to read back.

Decision Four: When — and for How Long?

Fix your dates, then attach collection and return hours you can honour. Each handover involves travel, paperwork, inspection and loading, so give both ends a generous stretch of the day. Raise late returns and extensions early. Contact the firm in advance, as particular trucks may not be free until booked.
