Write the Load Down First

Grab a tape measure and a notepad before you look at a single listing. If the job is one bulky item — a wardrobe, say — record its height, width, depth and rough weight. Those four numbers rule out the wrong trucks faster than any amount of browsing.

Check the Access Before You Pick a Size

A truck that fits your sofa is useless if it cannot reach the door. Walk the route at both ends: note gate widths, overhanging branches, tight bends and where you could actually park. A smaller van making two trips often beats a larger one wedged in a lane.

Let the Cautious Driver Set the Ceiling

Be honest about who will be driving. If that person has never handled anything bigger than a hatchback, a long wheelbase with a laden load bay will feel very different on narrow lanes. Choose the ceiling set by the least confident driver in the group, not the most ambitious one.

Ask About Cost and Cover Together

Once you have a shortlist, ask about the full cost in one go: the daily rate, mileage allowances, fuel expectations and what happens if the truck comes back late. Request the cover position in writing too, including any excess you would owe, so nothing surprises you on collection day.
