Do Your Checks Before the Paperwork

Most delays at the desk come from unfamiliarity, not paperwork. Ask to be shown the load ramp, the tail-lift switch and the mirror adjustments before you sign. Photograph any marks on the bodywork and check the fuel gauge together. Ten minutes in the yard saves an argument at return.

Set the Clock by the Whole Job

Underestimating the job is the commonest mistake. Loading takes longer than expected, and unloading takes longer still. Build the hire around honest hours, including travel, breaks and a margin for hold-ups. Reserve early, as trucks here may already be taken on your preferred date.

Say What You Are Actually Carrying

Vague requests produce vague quotes. Instead of asking for a truck, describe the job: perhaps four adults, six suitcases and a bicycle heading to a new flat in one trip. The team can then judge seating, load space and tie-down points, and suggest a cab layout that carries both.

Settle the Numbers While You Are Standing There

Once the vehicle suits the job, turn to the figures. Ask what the rate includes, how mileage is charged and what happens if you return early or late. Then settle the cover questions: what protection applies, what it costs and how the deposit is refunded. Written answers beat nods.
