Settle Your Drivers First

Decide who drives before you contact anyone. Only named drivers get the keys. Each name brings extra checks and forms. Adding someone later is harder than it sounds. Find every licence early. Check it is current. Declare points or a foreign licence at the outset, not at the counter.

Give Handovers Real Time

Trucks move between firm and customer slowly. Taking one on means signing documents and a joint walk-round. Return works the same in reverse. Unload, refuel, inspect. Whichever end you cut fine will run late. Ask for collection and return times in writing. Pad both ends generously.

Let the Load Pick the Truck

Write down everything that must travel. Give the sofa and the washing machine their own lines. Weight matters as much as space. A half-full bay can sit near its payload limit. Note items needing straps. If two sizes seem close, name both and let the firm advise.

Sort Money, Cover and Papers Early

Ask about insurance, excess, deposit and mileage in your first message. Query fuel terms too. Request the full document checklist. A licence is rarely the only item. Your own motor policy may not cover a hired truck. Get that in writing. Costs and cover firm up when you book.
