Ask About Money and Cover First

Deposits and insurance are awkward subjects at a collection desk with a queue behind you. Raise them in your opening message instead. Ask what the policy covers, how the deposit is held, what the mileage allowance includes, and request the firm's document checklist.

Give Two Honest Times

The rental clock covers only the hours the truck sits in your care. Travel, paperwork and loading all fall outside it. Note the hour you genuinely need the vehicle and the hour it can genuinely come back, then add slack at both ends and say whether weekend collection differs.

Name the Driver Before Anything Else

A truck that fits the load perfectly still stays in the yard if the nominated licence doesn't cover it. Dig the licence out while the enquiry is still in writing. Check it hasn't expired, declare anything unusual, and ask the firm directly what the vehicle requires.

Let the Load Choose the Truck

Guessing at size wastes money in both directions. Write down what the load weighs, how much space it fills and whether anything needs strapping or keeping upright. Mention a tail lift if manual handling would otherwise dominate the day. Set out facts and invite the firm's recommendation.
