Put the Driver First on the List

A licence problem found at the counter can end the booking outright. Dig the licence out, check it's valid, and declare any endorsements or overseas issue in your opening message. Mention the driver's confidence with larger vans, since a steady hand in a small van often beats a nervous one in something larger.

Measure the Load Before Naming a Size

'A decent-sized move' tells a hire firm nothing and invites the wrong van. Write a full inventory instead, measure the longest, tallest and least foldable items, and split the list into what travels upright and what must lie flat. One stubborn wardrobe can rule out an entire size class alone.

Size the Hire to the Whole Job, Not the Drive

Settle Costs in Writing, Then Handle Both Handovers

Put them in writing at the start: insurance cover, excess size, mileage allowance, fuel arrangements, deposit and late-return penalties. At collection, walk round the van with staff, record existing marks, and return it on time in the agreed condition.
