Put Real Minutes on Collection and Return

Collecting a van eats more time than people expect. Photos, fuel notes, and a walk-round inspection all take minutes, and a queue at the desk can stretch them further. If you must be loaded and gone by nine, treat collection as a task with its own generous allowance.

Settle Licence Details and Terms Early

Longer hires make paperwork matter more, so read the terms while options remain open. Decide whether a colleague will share the driving and whether their licence meets what the hire firm asks for; adjusting this later wastes an afternoon. Vans are not always plentiful here, so raise any particular needs early.

Build the Day Around the Return Hour

Write the return hour into your plan before anything else. A builder with the van until four should book the tip run for two, not three-thirty, because late returns on an extended hire can ripple into charges or a missed collection for the next driver. Work backwards from the deadline.

Be Plain About the Load and the Driver

Skip the sales pitch when describing what you need. A fortnight of flat-pack runs needs different capacity from a kitchen rip-out, and stating the honest weight and dimensions lets staff point you to the right size. Mention the driver's experience too; a nervous first-timer may prefer something smaller.
