Ask About Early Collection When You Book

Not every depot opens at dawn, so raise your preferred start time before anything is settled. If an early collection would make the whole job easier, say so plainly and hear what the firm can offer. Some mornings work, some do not, and knowing which saves a wasted trip.

Have Your Documents Ready From the Start

Your licence comes first, followed by whatever else the firm asks for, often ID, proof of address and a deposit. Endorsements or an overseas licence should be mentioned during booking rather than at the counter. At handover, walk round the van, check marks are logged, and note fuel, return rules and the due-back time.

Choose the Van Around the Load

Measure the awkward items, note what stacks and what lies flat, then describe the load honestly when you enquire. A few boxes suit a small van; a house clearance suggests something bigger. Mention tight gates or awkward parking too. The right size matters, though a particular model may already be reserved, so ask early.

Sort Cover and Costs Before You Collect

Insurance is easier to discuss while the booking is still forming. Ask what cover is included, what the excess runs to, and whether windscreen or goods in transit count separately. Check your own policy genuinely covers a hired van. Mileage limits, fuel terms and late-return charges belong in the same conversation.
