Start With Your Dates and Timing

Think beyond the drive itself when estimating duration — loading, unloading and the handover all take minutes you will need. An early start, say a seven o'clock collection for a house clearance, only works if the depot opens that morning, so ask before you commit.

Choose by Load, Not by Guesswork

Measure anything long, tall or heavy, and note the pieces that refuse to stack. A few boxes and a toolbox fit a small van easily; a full house move suggests something bigger. Weight limits matter as much as space, and awkward driveways may favour a compact vehicle.

Have Your Paperwork Ready

Your licence is the first thing any hire desk will ask for, so keep the details handy. Expect questions about identification, address and a deposit. Endorsements or a licence issued abroad should be raised early; each firm sets its own standards, and a last-minute discovery wastes the trip.

Check the Van Before You Drive Off

Walk round the vehicle with a member of staff and make sure existing dents and scuffs appear on the agreement. Note the fuel level, try the lights and glance at the tyres. If the van feels wrong for your load, ask about a swap while still at the desk.
