Treat the Two Handovers as Jobs in Their Own Right

Collecting a van and handing it back are tasks, not formalities. At pickup, walk round the vehicle with a member of staff, photograph any marks and check the fuel. At return, do the same in reverse. Ten careful minutes at each end saves an argument later about a scuff nobody noticed.

Count Every Stage of the Day, Then Round Upwards

Work backwards from your deadline. Loading, driving, unloading, a break, the return journey, refuelling: write each stage down with a rough time against it, then add a buffer. A run that looks like four hours often takes five. If a specific van is busy on your date, an alternative may take a little arranging, so ask early.

Be Candid About the Driver, the Load and the Ground

Think honestly about who will drive and what you are moving. A wardrobe needs straps and a blanket; garden waste needs a sweep-out afterwards. Tell the branch if the route involves a steep lane or a tight driveway, because a smaller vehicle might suit you better than the size you first pictured.

Raise the Paperwork Before You Raise Anything Else

Sort the documents before collection day. Bring your driving licence, a second proof of address, and a card in the driver's own name. If a second person might take the wheel, mention it in advance rather than on the forecourt. Nothing derails a seven o'clock start like a missing utility bill.
