Dig Out Your Licence Before Anything Else

The first job is finding your photocard licence and any code a hirer asks for. Leaving this until the morning of pickup invites delay, because nobody can hand over keys until the paperwork checks out. Sort it the evening before and one hurdle is already cleared.

Make the Hire Window Hold the Whole Job

Add every part of the day into your hire period, not just the drive. A 7am collection for a house clearance, say, still needs loading time, a tip run and the return leg. Book the window wide enough that a slow queue never leaves you rushing.

Choose the Van From the Load, Not the Other Way Round

Start with what you're actually moving. Ten boxes and a mattress fits a small panel van; a sofa, white goods or garden waste pushes you towards something bigger with a tail lift. The vans sitting at any yard can change, so describe your load when you enquire.

Understand What Happens at Collection and Return

At pickup you'll walk around the van, note any marks and check the fuel, then sign to say you've done so. Returning it follows the same logic: bring it back with the fuel where you found it and flag anything that happened on your travels.
