Start With the Load, Not the Vehicle

Measure your cargo before browsing anything. A sofa that won't angle through rear doors turns a sensible choice into a frustrating one. Write down the longest, widest and heaviest items, then add margin for padding and awkward shapes. Some vans in the area may already be reserved, so a shortlist of two or three sizes gives you room to adapt.

Be Realistic About Who's Driving

The person behind the wheel matters as much as the metal behind them. An unfamiliar high-roof van handles differently on narrow lanes than a small hatchback does. If a colleague or partner will share driving duties during a lengthy hire, raise this at the outset. A driver caught out by the van's size on day one sets a poor tone for the weeks that follow.

Look at Both Ends of the Journey

Cargo capacity means little if the van can't reach it. Picture the loading spot: is there a low beam, a tight gate or a steep kerb? Then do the same at the destination. Reversing a long-wheelbase van into a cramped yard tests anyone's patience. If either end looks doubtful, a shorter wheelbase with an extra trip often beats one heroic load.

Settle the Length and Cost Up Front

Extended hires reward early arithmetic. Ask how weekly rates compare with stacking daily ones, and when the vehicle is due back. A customer moving house over several weeks might find one agreed period cheaper than repeated extensions. Agree mileage allowances too. Sorting these figures before signing leaves the hire itself feeling straightforward rather than full of unwelcome arithmetic later.
