Sort the Paperwork Before Anything Else

Dig out your photocard licence first, then generate a DVLA check code online; both usually need to reach the rental desk before keys change hands. Anyone expecting to share driving should supply their details at this stage too, and the payment card should belong to the main hirer.

Give the Day Some Breathing Space

Say you want the van from seven in the morning so the day's driving happens before the roads fill up. Ask the depot how early a handover can realistically happen, then leave slack around it. On busy weekends the model you had in mind may already be taken.

Let the Load Decide the Size

Measure what is actually going in the back: a double mattress, a stack of flat-packed wardrobes or a few bags of rubble each point to a different wheelbase. Load height matters for tall furniture, and long planks need either a Luton-style body or a careful rethink.
