Start With Collection and Return

Your very first message should cover both handovers. Ask where the car is handed to you, whether it goes back to the same spot, and who inspects it with you. Photos of existing marks protect you later. A few quick snaps at collection can prevent a difficult conversation at hand-back.

Give the Day Some Breathing Room

The hours on the agreement are only the middle of your day. Travelling to the pickup, signing forms and settling into an unfamiliar car all take time nobody has scheduled. Round your timings up rather than down, and only promise a return slot you can genuinely keep. Enquiries reserve nothing on their own.

Sort Out Drivers and Licences Early

Hire cars are typically released only to the drivers named on the booking. If a partner or relative wants a turn at the wheel, add them before collection day. Dig out every licence now, and declare any endorsements or non-UK licences during booking rather than springing them at the counter.

Describe the Job, Then Ask About Costs

Rather than requesting a make you once rented, tell the firm what the car must do. Count passengers, measure the awkward luggage — the pushchair or golf clubs decide fit far more often than suitcases do — and ask about insurance, the excess, mileage and the deposit. Two sensible questions save surprises.
