Booking your first rental? Work out when you truly need the car and when you can genuinely hand it back, then add breathing space at both ends. Paperwork, inspections and refuelling eat time, and the stage with the least slack is usually the one that runs late.

Know What the Desk Will Ask For

Every operator runs its own checklist, so ask what you'll need to show before you travel. Expect your licence, something proving your address and a card for the deposit. Mention any points on your licence early, and add any extra drivers to the agreement before collection day.

Treat the Return as Part of the Job

Returning the car well matters as much as collecting it. Ask whether someone inspects it while you wait, what fuel level they expect, and where to leave the keys. Running late? Raise that possibility when you book, not on the day, when options narrow.

Be honest about your trip: count every passenger, measure luggage properly and flag anything unusually long or bulky. Bundle your money questions together early — insurance cover, excess size, mileage limits and deposit terms. Nothing counts as included unless it's written down clearly enough to quote back.
