Set Aside Proper Time for Pickup and Drop-off

A first-time handover takes longer than you expect. Budget an unhurried half-hour at pickup to walk around the car, photograph any marks and settle questions about fuel. Returning it deserves equal breathing space — arriving ten minutes before closing leaves no room to sort out a disputed scratch.

Fix Dates You'll Actually Keep, Then Ask Early

Decide your dates before you contact anyone, because changing them midway usually costs more than picking correctly at the start. If you need a car for a summer wedding or a bank-holiday weekend, enquire well in advance — popular models may already be spoken for.

Put the Licence Ahead of Everything Else

Dig out your driving licence before anything else. It must be valid and carried with you, and a first-timer who leaves it at home doesn't collect the car. Holders of older paper licences, or ones issued abroad, should ask the hire firm early what extra evidence they expect to see.

Describe the Load in Figures, Not Impressions

Say what you're carrying with numbers, not adjectives. 'Two adults, two children, three suitcases and a pushchair' tells the branch exactly what will fit, whereas 'a family's worth of luggage' tells them nothing. The same goes for boot shape — a pram and a set of golf clubs need different spaces.
