Think Through Both Ends of the Hire

Start with geography, not vehicles. Where will you collect the car, and where does it go back? A traveller returning from Rye might want a drop-off closer to Hastings than Fairlight itself. If the firm cannot guarantee your first choice of car, ask what the alternative would be before you decide.

Put the Money Questions in Writing First

Ask for the total figure, then break it down. Is mileage capped or unlimited? Does fuel come full, and is there a refuel charge if you return it part-used? Getting each cost in an email gives you something concrete to compare if you request quotes from two firms.

Name Your Drivers and Check Every Licence

Two colleagues sharing a wedding trip will both want to drive, so name them both from the outset. Adding a driver later usually means paperwork mid-journey. Have each licence to hand, including any additional documents newer holders carry, and record who is doing which leg of the drive.

Brief the Firm on Passengers and Luggage

Four adults, two children and a boot full of camping gear changes what you need. Say so when you enquire. A smaller car might squeeze the bags but leave knees cramped after an hour. Describe the real load honestly, then let the supplier suggest a suitably sized vehicle.
