Ask About Money First

Money questions cost nothing at the enquiry stage, so ask them at once. What insurance comes as standard? How large is the excess? What happens with mileage, fuel and the deposit? Get the answers written down, and read your motor policy too, in case it already covers a hire car.

Count People and Luggage Honestly

Count everyone travelling, including anyone joining part-way through, and list what's coming too. That long, bulky or awkward item matters more than four suitcases, so name it early. Seating and boot space are separate sums: five people plus five bags rarely fit a five-seat car comfortably.

Settle on Dates You'll Keep

Fix dates you genuinely mean to keep. Cars run scarce over weekends, school holidays and festive breaks, so enquire early — though which cars are genuinely free only becomes clear at the booking stage. Allow time at both ends for paperwork and getting used to the car.

Check the Licence Early

Check your licence is current before anything else, and have the details ready. Mention endorsements or a licence issued abroad in your first message; each hire firm judges these differently. Decide whether anyone else will drive, as extra drivers usually need naming, and ask what collection and return will involve.
