Set Handover Times You Can Keep

Collecting a hire car means travelling to where it's kept, signing the agreement, checking it over and loading your things. The return repeats those steps in reverse. So block out a proper stretch of the day for each end, and count backwards from any fixed commitment.

Ask the Cover and Cost Questions Early

Insurance feels abstract until you're holding a pen at the counter, so ask beforehand. What cover comes with the car, how large the excess runs, how the deposit is held, what the mileage allowance includes and how fuel works between handovers — treat nothing as included unless it's written down.

Describe the Journeys, Not the Badge

Describe the work the car will do rather than requesting a badge. Short errands with one passenger place light demands on almost anything, while longer runs carrying several people and their bags argue for extra cabin and boot space. Mention a child seat, an automatic or a mobility aid early.

Settle the Driver List at Home

The agreement releases the car to its named drivers and nobody else, so settle the list at home. Check each licence is current, and declare anything a firm would reasonably ask about — penalty points, a recent test, an automatic-only licence. A surprise at the counter can end the handover.
