Settle the Dates First — and Keep Them Honest

Know whether you need the car for hours, days or longer, and offer collection and return times you can actually keep. If your day might run late — collecting a purchase, lingering with family — ask about a flexible return before the agreement is signed; extensions agreed afterwards are rarely so simple.

Name Every Driver Before You Collect

The agreement covers only the drivers recorded on it, so decide your line-up early. A partner or colleague hoping to take a turn must be added and checked like the lead hirer. Verify each licence now, and disclose any points or overseas licence during booking, not at the desk.

Describe the Job, Not the Model

Rather than requesting a make you once rented, explain what the car must do: passenger numbers at the busiest point, the length of journey, and everything coming along. Odd-shaped luggage — clubs, buggies, flat-packs — decides the boot as much as suitcases do. List must-haves such as an automatic or child seats.

Ask About Cost and Cover in Your First Message

Raise charges, insurance and handover arrangements at the outset, when nothing is signed. Ask about the excess, mileage limits, fuel policy and how the deposit is held. At collection, walk round the car with staff, note marks on the paperwork, and photograph anything you would rather not be charged for.
