Begin With the Non-Negotiables

If, say, a family road trip involves three drivers sharing the wheel across long days, agree that line-up before you book. Each person should bring their licence and expect to be added as a driver. Adding someone later is usually more hassle and more expense than doing it at the counter on day one.

Ask the Cost, Cover and Timing Questions While It Is Easy

Before paying anything, ask what the total includes and what it does not. Query the fuel policy, mileage limits, and what happens if you return the car late. Whether a particular model is actually on the forecourt when you arrive is never guaranteed until you collect it, so keep a flexible second choice in mind.
