Start With the Journeys, Not the Vehicle

Sketch every trip you expect to make before comparing cars. A weekend of short town runs asks something different of a vehicle than a long motorway stretch with relatives aboard. Count Heads and Count Luggage — They Are Not the Same Tally

Four passengers with weekend bags fit comfortably where four passengers with suitcases, a pushchair and a set of golf clubs do not. Work out luggage volume separately from seat count, then picture the loaded car on your longest drive. Some travellers drop a size for economy and regret it the moment the boot fills.

Settle the Driver List Before Anyone Is Contacted

Decide in advance who might take the wheel, including the relative who offers to share the driving home. Every driver has to be agreed with the hire firm from the outset, and adding someone later is rarely straightforward. Sorting this over breakfast avoids awkward conversations at the collection desk.

Ask About Cover, Charges and Timing While Nothing Is Signed

While you are still weighing options, ask plainly what protection applies, what happens if you return the car a day early or late, and how any mileage or fuel charges are worked out. Late questions asked calmly beforehand cost nothing. Answers given in advance are far easier to compare than surprises on the day.
