Match the Car to Your Diary, Not the Brochure

Picture the week ahead rather than the photograph in a brochure. A couple dashing between two meetings needs far less car than a family towing luggage for a lakeside fortnight. Write down your passengers, luggage and the roads you expect; the right size follows from that list.

Ask the Money Questions Before Anything Is Signed

Before committing, get the full picture of what you'll pay: the daily rate, fuel expectations, mileage limits and what happens if plans change. Two firms quoting similar figures can differ sharply once extras are tallied. A five-minute phone conversation now saves an unwelcome surprise at the counter.

Settle the Driver Line-Up at Home

Decide who will drive before you leave home, and make sure each person brings their licence and any other paperwork the hire firm requires. Adding a driver later, from a roadside lay-by, is far harder than adding them while you arrange the booking.

Give Both Handovers Room in the Day

Work out how long each handover genuinely takes. Collecting a car with three drivers present, questions about the controls, and a walk-round inspection eats more than ten minutes. Leave a buffer at the end too, so a late return never has to be rushed.
