Start With the Load, Not the Vehicle

Settle the Driving Question Next

Next, decide who actually drives. If you hold a licence from before 1997 you may already be entitled to heavier vehicles; younger holders usually are not. Check the photocard date before you fall for a particular truck, because a vehicle you cannot legally drive is no bargain at any price.

Give an Honest Account of Both Ends

Describe both sites plainly when you enquire. A farm track with a narrow gate, a town centre with no loading bay, or a steep drive changes what will work on the day. Mention gravel, headroom and turning space, and say whether anyone will help with lifting at either end.

Put the Money and Paperwork on the Table

Get the picture on cost before committing. Ask what the daily rate covers, how fuel is charged, and what the late-return rule is. Read the hire paperwork promptly. One supplier may have a suitable truck free on your dates and another may not, so it pays to ask early.
